Gone days of school sports
We saw attractive competition in the annual sports at Shahzadpur High School and Ullapara Merchants’ High School in Sirajganj district in the sixties. The events were 100 meter sprint, 200 meter sprint, 400 meter sprint, 15000 meter sprint , high jump, long jump, hop step and jump, javelin throw, throwing the shot-put, discuss throw and others.
A good number of competitors took part almost in every event watched by a large crowd. The annual sports helped the students to continue practice for the coming year and refrain from doing evil work.
Besides, inter-class soccer, hockey, cricket and volleyball were on the list of competitions. But where are those sports nowadays?
A Former Student
Ullapara
Century old Hardinge Bridge
The 1.4 mile long Hardinge Bridge at Paksey in Pabna on the river Padma is remembered through out the world for its amazing structural design and building dexterity. The building skill of the Hardinge Bridge is taught to the students of the railway engineering in Europe and the North America. Engineer Gales should be given thanks for his efforts to make the bridge part of history.
But the cenotaph bridge having two lanes broad gauge lines on it will have to be abandoned by 2030, as its life already ended last year. Now the government will have to build a new railway bridge by it before the Hardinge bridge is sent to the recycle bin.
