Asia in second spot

In the concluded Rio Olympics ended on August 22, Asia stood second with 71 gold medals behind Europe, which netted 136 gold. The Asian athletes collected medals from table tennis, badminton, swimming, field & track, gymnastics, archery and volleyball in particular.
So far the regions are concerned, East Asia won 50 gold medals, Central Asia 13, South East Asia five and West Asia three only. China of East Asia alone won 26 medals, however, 10 less than it was predicted.
The sad thing is that South Asia, a land of about 160 crore, could not even capture a single gold, which the countries’ federations should lament. It was Indian badminton star P.V.Sindhu only, who traveled near to the gold medal before losing to Spain’s Carolina Marin in the women’s single final. We congratulate her.
Bangladesh participated in several events and maintained past tradition.
