Kamal Gold Cup Football :
The first edition of the Kamal Gold Cup International Football Tournament will be held in Chittagong in October with eight club teams from home and abroad. They are Mohan Bagan and East Bengal from India, Nepal Police Club from Katmandu, Abahani Limited and Mohammedan Sporting Club from Dhaka, local league champions and hosts Abahani KC. The eighth team may be from either Sri Lanka or Maldives.
We welcome the project in order that soccer may get new life in Chittagong. But we request the sponsors that they should try for at least one team from either Iran or South Korea so that the crowds may be delighted watching the players’ excellent skill and footwork. We know that these two countries are the Asia’s No. 1 and No. 2 respectively according to the latest FIFA ranking and therefore their participation will give the tournament extra dimension.
In this regard, I take the opportunity to inform our readers that Sheikh Kamal, eldest son of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was a sports minded man. He specially loved soccer. That is why he purchased Dhaka Dhanmondi Club and named it Abahani KC. This club has won many trophies in soccer, hockey, cricket and other disciplines. Sheikh Kamal is dead but alive through his team Abahani KC.
We wish success of the Kamal Gold Cup International Football tournament.
