Water flow at Hardinge Bridge point
The people of Paksey Union under Iswardi upazilas in Pabna district have not heard the murmur of the River of Padma since late seventies. The fishermen pass their days in utter distress as there is no water in the river.
The world famous Hardinge Bridge has been the witness to the once rapidly flowing river since March 1915, while the visitors standing on the Paksey Railway Station feel discomfort as the hot wind blows sands and dusts from the river side.
During the rainy season until late seventies, we feared to swim because of roaring waves. But now anyone can wade across the river for which Paksey Railway town has lost its glamour and beauty despite the fact that Paksey is the largest railway division in the country and the design of the bridge is perhaps the best in the world.
All these are the adverse results of the Farakka Barrage on the Indian part of the Ganges. Should not our government take the issue with the Indian counterpart?
