Well done Dhanmandi ClubIt is unfortunate that Sheikh Jamal Dhanmandi Club lost to Calcutta Mohammedan Sporting Club in the IFA Shield Final on Saturday in Calcutta Yubo Bharati Kriangon. The team from Bangladesh was unfortunate in the sense that they scored first and dominated the proceedings most of the time, but finally missed the crown. Since football is a game of goal and the spectators remember the results only, the team from India will be remembered for a long time by its supporters, especially for winning an All-Indian tournament first time in 43 years. The triumph will surely help Mohammedan Sporting Club’s players fight against relegation in the underway Indian League. Teams from Goa have been dominating the Indian football for over a decade. Calcutta Mohammedans won the Senior Division Football League latest in 1980. They visited Dhaka early 1960 and played three matches, winning against the Dhaka Mohammedan 3-0 and the Dhaka X1 3-1 but lost to the Dhaka Wanderers Club 2-3. The same year, they took part in the coveted Aga Khan Gold Cup Football Tournament. In the final, they outclassed the Makassar football Club from Indonesia 4-1. Abid Hossain, Ghaffur, Omar, Rahamatullah and Moosa of the Calcutta Mohammedans displayed excellence football. The Dhanmandi Club also produced stunning football. They outplayed East Bengal 3-0 and Mohan Bagan 1-0 on way to the final. They have good future. Through this letter column, may I request the club authorities to rename the club’s name ‘Jamal Sporting Club, Dhaka.’M. ShaheedDhaka
