About the climate refugees

block
As a resident of coastal area, I’m in fear whether I’ve to leave my forefather’s land. The fear becomes much stronger when I see, like me, hundreds of people of country’s coastal belt are now facing a devastating migration problem. Isn’t it an impossible choice between battered coastlines and urban slums?
Most of the times, we are vulnerable to cyclone, flood and other natural disasters. Despite several measures taken by the authorities concerned, the overall situation is not yet changed. I don’t know what I will do.
In many places, on the other hand, the mighty rivers are taking the lands forcing many families to leave their ancestral homes. If the river didn’t take their lands, they wouldn’t need to be going anywhere. But who would assure it?
In general, the erosion by the rivers Padma, Jamuna and Brahmaputra in different places of Shariatpur, Gaibandha, Bogra, Jamalpur and Rajbari districts have already compelled thousands of people to shift their homes, and even change their life style. Already, the river erosions have swallowed several houses, schools, dams, roads, business establishments, mosques and other establishments.
I urge the authorities concerned to take the issue of climate refugees under active consideration.
