Save the poor workers from accidents
I feel so disturbed when see workers are still doing their jobs in the ship-breaking yards in Chattogram without proper safety arrangements. I have witnessed dozens of death of workers in the ship-breaking yards in the decades. The authorities concerned promised several times to take legal action against the scrap ship owners, but nothing has changed. On Saturday last, six workers received burn injuries as a fire broke out at a scrap ship in a ship-breaking yard in Shitalpur area under Sitakunda upazila. The fire broke out when the workers were cutting parts of ship with a machine inside the scrap ship without taking protective measure.
I do urge the authorities concerned to implement existing law properly so that the poor workers could able to save themselves from such accidents. Action also needed against them as the scrap ship owners are polluting the sea water and surrounding environment by spreading burned-oil and other substances during cutting the ships.
