Banned fishing nets are still used for catching jatka
I’m resident of a coastal district. It’s a matter of great regret that, I often see a section of fishermen have not yet stopped catching jatka (hilsa smaller than nine inches) alongside larger fishes with banned categories of nets in different rivers of the district.
Usually, the fishermen catch ‘jatka’ with banned current nets and bandha nets (a kind of fishing net kept tied in the river to trap small fishes). It’s mentionable that Bandha nets also cause damage to eggs of the fish.
The officials of Fisheries Department are indifferent to such illegal fishing for the reasons best known to them. Because of use of banned fishing nets, the genuine fishermen are facing intolerable suffering, as they do not get expected fish from their legal nets.
