A heroic death :
On 18 February each year, I cannot help my tears coming out from the eyes, as on this day about 49 year ago, Dr. Shamsuzzoha, Reader of the Chemistry Department and Proctor of Rajshahi University met a tragic death in front of the varsity main gate. He went there to bring back the agitating students fearing casualties because the students were intercepted by the troops loyal to the then Pakistan government.
The district administration imposed Section 144 in order to stop the students from marching through the streets with banners for right to self-determination. But the All Party Students Action Committee decided to violate 144 and accordingly asked all to assemble in front of the main gate.
Reaching the gate, Dr. Zoha requested the commander holding the badge of Lieutenant not to shoot at the students. But the commander disregarded it and ordered his troops to fire. The Urdu speaking soldiers shot at the students, who quickly retreated to the campus. But Dr. Zoha fell down on the ground with bullet injury and became the prey of the cruel Lieutenant’s bayonet.
The favourite teacher of the students died at the Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital despite the doctors’ all out efforts to cure him. He was buried in front of the Administrative Building attended by all the teachers and the students. Dr. Zoha is alive in the heart of the nation, so we remember him from the core of our heart.
