For hawker-free footpaths

Most of the roads of Dhaka city were hawker-free for some days in the run up to – and in the aftermath of – the election. But now it’s back to square one. Once again, hawkers have occupied sidewalks in numerous areas of the city. While the authorities have repeatedly conducted eviction moves, they haven’t been successful.
It is because some scrupulous local politicians and members of the law enforcing force allow them to set up their small shops a few days later. In the process, pedestrians are the worst sufferers. Instead of the footpaths, they have to use roads to walk, exposing themselves to serious accidents.
We urge the authorities to investigate and take actions against those dishonest politicians and public servants who shelter hawkers in exchange for bribes. Only then, the problem may be solved.
