Dhaka Football League :
Untill the introduction of Bangladesh Football League a decade ago, the Dhaka Senior Division Football League was the most attractive sport event in the country before and after independence. Almost everyday, spectators swarmed into the stadium to watch the league matches of their favourite teams. We had to struggle hard to manage tickets and never left the gallery pending the last whistle of the referee.
In 1985, Abahani KC beat Brothers Union (BU) in a thrilling encounter after down by two goals in the first half. This was the match witnessed by a capacity crowd because the result decided fate of the crown. Brothers Union would have won the league title had not right winger Wasim missed a sure sitter, and had not the coach of that time made a wrong decision in the players replacement in the second half. That day the supporters of the BU left the stadium with a broken heart, never repaired due to the club’s management crisis.
Abahani shinned not only in football, but in other events like hockey and cricket. The credit goes to Sheikh Kamal, a sports dedicated son of the soil. He hired n European coach to impart his players training in modern technique and skills of football. That is why Abahani KC (now Abahani Limited), Dhaka is the most successful club in the country and the people will remember Sheikh Kamal for a long, long period.
