Sexual harassment in public transport :
A survey shows that 94 percent of Bangladeshi women have been sexually harassed in public transport at least once in their life. Due to social stigma, many victims don’t feel comfortable to reveal or share their bitter experiences. That is why it’s tough to document the actual extent of harassment of women.
However, at times, some women come forward and speak up, shedding light on the plight of women who use public transport. Nowadays, social media sites have become powerful mediums for victims to share their experiences.
Students of Uttara University have recently taken to the streets to ensure that the culprits who harassed one of their classmates were held to account. This exemplary act should be replicated by other students. Our political leadership shouldn’t keep mum about this. They should acknowledge the problem and talk about it. The more they talk about it, the more aware people will become vigilant about this issue.
