To the Mayors of City Corporations :
Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Mohammad Sayed Khokonon on March 19 warned the homeowners of the city about eliminating Aedes mosquitoes’ germs. He said that mobile court would visit every house of the city by April 8 to ascertain whether there is any germ. He further added, if germs are found in any house, the owner will be punished with fine or by awarding jail.
We do not know what to say because the declaration is just absurd. People cannot open their doors or windows as hordes of mosquitoes enter from outside. Mosquitoes are breeding in drains, canals and swamps, in water bodies. They are growing in millions. We learned that in the last five years both the city corporations of Dhaka have spent around TK 150 crore on mosquito control. Where has gone that huge amount of money? Is the taxpayers’ money going down the drain to help mosquitoes to breed?
We protest vehemently. The city corporations must take immediate actions to eradicate the menace to give people relief and refrain from threatening them for which the negligence of the people in charge is responsible
