Germany in World Cup Football
Germany became champions four times and finished as runners-up as many times. It means that Germany played eight times in the final, ahead of Brazil, which played seven times, Italy six and Argentina five. In the 2018 World Cup, Brazil and Germany are co-favourites
The European nations generally prefer power football. But we saw a remarkable change in the German technique in the latest competition. Displaying artistic football what Brazil usually displayed in the fifties and sixties, Germany captured their fourth title beating Argentina 1-0 in the final in South America. Thus Germany after Brazil and Spain won the World Cup beyond own continent. In this connection, Brazil has earned an incredible record of annexing the title in every continent so far played. Though they were not successful in Africa in 2010, they won the Confederation Cup in 2009.
Germany won their first World title in 1954 beating Hungary 3-2 in the final. The amazing matter was that Hungary outclassed eventual champions 8-3 at the group stage. Similar record had another time in 1974 when they as West Germany lost to East Germany in Group A in order to avoid Brazil in the quarterfinals. They beat Holland 2-1 in the final to win a second time.
A controversial win over Argentina in 1990 gave them the third title, but the critics did not take it easy. However, none can question their 1-0 won over Argentina in 2014. Interestingly, Argentina defeated Germany 2-1 in 1986 final.
Germany are a side which study the proceedings of a competition carefully to decide their next strategy, have mingled art of football with power football and never give up spirit to fight back. And that is why they are co-favourites in the 21st edition of the World Cup Football-the greatest show on earth.
