WC makes Football popular
I asked a rickshaw puller: Do you enjoy the World Cup Football matches? He said, “I do.” To the question, which is his favourite team, he said: Argentina. To the similar questions, a medicine shop owner from the city’s South Goran area said: I am not interested in sports. Even I do not take part in the discussion though many buyers coming here put similar questions to me.
A day labourer said, “I like football. I played football with my friends in my village in the district of Pabna. I watch the World Cup matches live when I get the time. My favourite team is Brazil.
A former railway officer of Paksey Railway Divisional headquarters said: Football has lost its glamour. In the sixties, an attractive football tournament was held regularly at Paksey. Tens of thousands of spectators used to enjoy the performances of the participating clubs from Rajshahi, Khulna, Pabna, Sirajganj, Rajbari, Kushtia and other districts.
The days are lost. There is no soccer tournament in this railway town since the mid-sixties. There is no initiative. Politics has ruined the future of our sports. I do not know how to recover from decaying of sports in our country.
