Speakers at an inception meeting said the Reading Enhancement for Advancing Development Activity (READ) project effectively enhances Bengali text reading abilities of the minor primary school children.
RDRS Bangladesh organised the meeting to introduce the project, being implemented with assistance of the USAID Save the Children, among the officials concerned at its training centre in Nilphamari town on Monday, a press release said.
Deputy Commissioner of Nilphamari Zakir Hossain attended the project inception meeting as the chief guest with District Primary Education Officer of Nilphamari Dilip Kumar Banik in the chair. Kishoreganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Nilphamari Siddikur Rahman attended the occasion as the special guest.
Director- Partnership Management of Save the Children for READ project Shahin Islam delivered the keynote paper narrating goals of the project being implemented in the selected primary schools to enhance Bengali reading abilities of the students from class one to three. Programme Coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh for Nilphamari K M Rashedul Arefin delivered welcome speech while Project Coordinator of the READ project Mohammad Nuruzzaman discussed ongoing activities and success of the project.
Manager (Communications) of the Save the Children for READ project Ratna Jhara from Dhaka also addressed the meeting.
The Upazila Primary Education Officers, Instructors of Upazila Resource Centres of Dimla and Kishoreganj upazilas of Nilphamari, Upazila Assistant Primary Education Officers, officials of RDRS Bangladesh and READ project participated. The speakers said the READ project began its activities in 120 newly nationalised primary schools under 22 unions in Mithapukur and Badarganj upazilas of Rangpur and Sadar and Ulipur upazilas of Kurigram district in the first phase since 2014.
Following effectiveness in enhancing Bengali reading abilities of the targeted children in first phase, more 149 government primary schools have been brought under the project activities in 19 unions of Dimla and Kishoreganj upazilas in Nilphamari since 2015, they said.
The chief guest called upon the primary school teachers for building a changed mindset in pioneering the process of properly bringing-up of the children, who are future of the nation, following the time-befitting READ project model. He put special emphasis on the issue of reading Bengali texts loudly by the minor school children in place of silent reading habit for attaining accurate accent and pronunciation of every Bengali word to make reading completely effective.
