Reaching govt services to farmers for food security stressed

Speakers at a ‘meet the media’ ceremony have stressed for creating awareness among the small and marginal farmers so that they could easily avail the government assistance and subsidies to ensure their food security.
They were addressing the ceremony arranged by Social Equality for Effective Development (SEED) with assistance of the European Union and Oxfam GB at Rangpur Shahittya Parisad auditorium in the city on Saturday afternoon.
Regional Project Coordinator of SEED Bankim Chandra Saha read out written statement on ‘Meeting at district level with media personnel for sharing the identified gap in the service related to food security.’
Editor of the Daily Rangpur Chitra Shushanto Bhowmick presided over the occasion moderated by Project Officer of SEED Afroza Sultana.
Local journalists Laboni Yeasmin (Daily Observer), Badsha Osmani (Prathom Khabar), Asaduzzaman Afzal (Daily Juger Alo), Shakil Ahmed (Dainik Ajkal) and SM Piyal (Daily Rangpur Chitra) and Humayun Kabir (Dainik Kartoa), spoke.
Bankim Chandra Saha said many small and marginal farmers are still being remaining deprived of getting the assistance being given by the government only due to lack of adequate awareness among them.
He called upon the media workers for creating awareness among small and marginal farmers so that they could have easy access to land, other resources and easily avail the government assistance for increasing crop production to ensure food security.
The overall food production could be increased to ensure food security of the small and marginal farmers if they would properly get the huge government assistance being given towards the directions.
He also put emphasis on ensuring just price of the agricultural products being produced by the small and marginal farmers to make farm activities more profitable and relieve them from poverty, financial crisis and burden of loans to lead better life.
Bankim said SEED has been working with 3,462 small and marginal farmers of Balapara, Tepamadhupur, Kursha and Shaheedbag unions under Kawnia upazila in Rangpur to assist them in getting government assistance to ensure food security.
“We have been assisting the small and marginal farmers of these unions and 250 of them have got the easy-term agricultural loans from the government banks with assistance of SEED this year,” he said.
