Re-excavation of 93.98 km canal in DND areas planned

A total of 93.98-kilometer canal will be re-excavated for extraction of rain-water from Shampur, Shimrail, Adamjeenagar, Pagla and Fatulla areas.
“The mega project of Tk 558 crore development work to remove stagnant water from within DND embankments will start from September or October,” said Abu Hossain Babla, Member of Parliament, while distributing relief among the water marooned people at Shampur in the city yesterday.The MP said, “The projects will be supervised by the Bangladesh Army. The work of those projects will be completed in two years.After completion the situation will improve in the DND embankment areas.“Besides, about 32,500 cubic meters additional link canals will also be re-excavated,” he said. The MP distributed 50 tonnes of rice as relief received from the Ministry of Disaster Managements and Relief for the flood affected 2,500 people of the area on the day.Babla said, the government plans to set up two pump stations at Shimrail and Adamjeenagar. “The Local Government and Rural Development Ministry also established three pumping plants at Shampur, Pagla and Fatulla to make the water extraction easy,” the MP said.He also stated of the government’s plan of constructing more cross drains, RCC girder bridges and culverts in DND embankment. The MP assured the people of no more suffering from water stagnant after completion of work. Deputy Police Commissioner of DMP, M Farid Uddin, Dhaka District Relief Officer M Abdus Sattar Khan, Project Implement Officer of Tejgaon Development Circle Mainul Islam and Shampur UP Chairman Shafiqur Rahman, among others, were present.
