Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) is firmly determined to keep its installations smoking free as part of its commitment to make the city clean, green, healthy and educated.
From now on, none will be allowed to smoke in the city bhaban’ and its premises and other offices, city hospital and urban clinics for protecting people from various chronic diseases caused by smoking.
In phases, restriction will be imposed on selling cigarette and Biri (hand made cigarettes) from the shops in-front of all the educational institutions.
City Mayor Mosaddique Hossain Bulbul pronounced the declaration while addressing a guideline implementation workshop styled “Smoke-free Public Place and Transports” held at the city bhaban’ seminar hall in Rajshahi today as the chief guest.
RCC and Association for Communication Development (ACD) jointly organized the workshop in association with Campaign for Tobacco-free Kids and Bloomberg Philanthropics.
In their keynote presentations, Taifur Rahman, Director, Bangladesh Programme of Campaign for Tobacco-free Kids and its consultant Shariful Islam and Khandaker Ehsanul Amin Emon, Programme Coordinator of ACD, narrated various aspects of the amended Tobacco Control Law and necessity of its successful implementation.
They told the workshop that smoking both active and passive causes cancer of lung, throat, mouth and stomach and it also affects our heart and breathing.
They viewed there has been many evidences that smoking and other uses of tobacco products kill thousands of people every year. So, there is no alternative to adopt strict measures for substantial and sustainable reduction of the uses.
Mayor Bulbul asserted that the city corporation will put in its level best efforts to control smoking in public places and public transports to ensure a sound public health. He, however, said public support is very essential in this regard.
Besides, social awareness and self-rectification is very important to make the society free from the tobacco uses, the smoking in particular.
Bulbul alleged that some of the tobacco companies are expanding their market promotional activities everywhere in the name of corporate social responsibilities.
Panel Mayor Nurun Nahar Begum, Chief Executive Officer Ajahar Ali, Chief Revenue Officer Syeda Jebinnissa Sultana, Chief Health Officer Dr AFM Anzuman Ara Begum also spoke on the occasion.
