Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has attained 100 percent target in the four-day long National Vitamin ‘A’ Plus Campaign-2021, held from December 11 to 14 last.
The city corporation had set the target of feeding 62,960 babies–7,967 aged between six and 11-month with one blue-coloured ‘A’ capsule while 54,993 aged 12-59 months with one red-coloured capsule, RCC sources said.
A total of 7,899 babies aged between six and 11 months were administered one blue-coloured ‘A’ capsule while 56,121 babies from 12 to 59 months received one red-coloured capsule here attaining the 100 percent target.
RCC Chief Health Officer Dr Anjuman Ara Begum told BSS that the programme has been conducted in 384 centers in the city. Some 768 health workers were engaged in the centers for administering the capsules properly.
She said vitamin ‘A’ supplement is essential for the normal functioning of the visual system, maintenance of cell function for growth, red blood cell production, immunity and reproduction.
The supplementation is also important for substantial reduction of the death rate caused by diarrhea and measles.
Besides, various problems including eyesight and night blindness could be prevented and cured through successful implementation of the campaign, Dr Begum said, adding “The vitamin ‘A’ plus supplement is helpful for reducing the severity and duration of illnesses associated with pneumonia and diarrhea.”
