Sylhet Bureau :
Rayhan’s mother Salma Begum has now approached the High Court seeking justice for her son who was allegedly tortured to death in Sylhet under police custody.
She also wants to be a petitioner in the writ petition filed earlier seeking judicial inquiry.
Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Fayez Uddin said that he had filed the writ petition in the High Court on October 12 in the public interest for a proper investigation into Rayhan’s death in police custody.
On Sunday, Barrister Abdul Qayyum filed a new petition in the court on behalf of Salma to join the writ petition. The deceased family demanded a fair and impartial investigation with appropriate compensation, Barrister Fayez added.
The petition is included in the cause list of the High Court bench of Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Md Khairul Alam on Monday.
Meanwhile, Salma Begum has been taking part in various programs including the road blockades by locals seeking justice for Rayhan.
Previously, Salma was headlines in the media by holding a hunger strike in front of the Bandarbazar police station.
The people of Sylhet Akhalia area are still demonstrating over Rayhan murder case. They held a meeting on Sunday to decide on a new action plan and might announce a new program on Monday regarding the arrest of the key suspect, suspended SI Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan.
Rayhan Ahmed was reportedly beaten to death on October 11 in police custody at the Bandar Bazar police outpost. According to the autopsy report, he had 111 injury marks and two of his nails were pulled off.
However, police denied the murder allegation put forward by the family, claiming that he was caught by locals while mugging and was lynched. Police claimed they had found Rayhan wounded from the mob lynching and had taken him to a hospital where he reportedly succumbed to his injuries.
On October 12, Rayhan’s wife filed a case under the Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention) Act 2013 with Sylhet Kotwali police station.
So far, four policemen have been suspended from their posts in connection with Rayhan’s death, including suspended SI Akbar.
