Rayhan Uddin Ahmed died of excessive torture at Bandar Bazar Police Outpost in Sylhet, said forensic experts on Thursday.
After postmortem of the body at Forensic Medicine Department morgue in Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, the forensic experts said the victim died of inflicting excessive beating.
Earlier, the body of Rayhan, who died in police custody at Bandar Bazar Police Outpost on October 11, was exhumed for postmortem again.
Led by executive magistrates Misbah Uddin and Sajib Ahmed, a team of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) were present during the exhumation of the body at Panchayet Graveyard, Akhalia in Sylhey city on Thursday morning.
Later, the body was sent to Forensic Medicine Department morgue in Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for postmortem.
Earlier, Sylhet Kotwali Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Baten, former investigation officer of Rayhan murder case, appealed to the court to exhume the body.
The 34-year-old Rayhan, a resident of Akhalia in Sylhet city, died of tortutre under police custody on October 11.
Victim’s family alleged that Rayhan was beaten to death in police custody after police detained him. But, police claimed angry mob had beaten Rayhan to death suspecting him as a robber.
Rayhan’s widow Tahmina Akter Tonni filed the murder case with Kotwali Police Station.
On Tuesday, the case was handed over to the PBI according to the directives of the Police Headquarters in Dhaka.
Meanwhile, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has launched a manhunt to arrest the prime accused and suspended Sub-Inspector Akbar Hossain Bhuiyan for his involvement in torture of Rayhan Uddin Ahmed.
Besides, the PBI has sent letters to all land port and airport immigration authorities requesting them taking necessary steps so that absconding accused SI Akbar cannot flee the country in any way.
PBI chief DIG Banaj Kumar Majumder came up with the disclosure in a press briefing at PBI’s head office in the city’s Dhanmondi on Thursday.
DIG Banaj Kumar said the PBI received the documents of the incident at the Bandarbazar Police Outpost in Sylhet on Tuesday night. A PBI team from Sylhet was present at the spot for three to four hours. “We have started the investigation. At the initial stage of the investigation, we felt that it was very important to catch the suspended SI Akbar.”
“We have informed all the immigration authorities not to allow SI Akbar to flee the country,” he said. “The Home Ministry has also informed different immigration offices on the border. We have kept a team standby to nab him.”
DIG Banaj Kumar Majumder further said, “IGP has always told us not to ruin the reputation you have gained during Coronavirus. Akbar has ruined the reputation of the police by committing these misdeeds. He didn’t think about us, so we don’t have a chance to think about him.”
Asked about the causes of the murder, he said, “We are investigating the matter. Not everything can be said in a day.”
On October 12, four police personnel, including SI Akbar, were suspended, while three others withdrawn following the death of Rayhan.
