Members of the Hindu community began celebrating one of their major religious festivals, Rath Yatra with due religious and festivity on Thursday.
Thousands of Hindu devotees gathered at the selected places and joined with full enthusiasm the ritual of pulling chariots to celebrate the occasion.
The biggest and the oldest journey of Jagannath Dev in Bagerhat district as well as the 2nd biggest and oldest journey of Jagannath Dev in the country was brought out from Laupala at Jatrapur, 14 kilometers away from here on Thursday paraded the area with festive mood.
Thousands of Hindu community members including female and children joined in pulling the rath (chariot) by long ropes.
The participants attired in traditional Hindu costumes beat drums and played other musical instruments and walked on the area.
A large number of onlookers of various creeds and cast were seen witnessing the colourful Rath Yatra on both sides of the roads.
As a part of the festival, a month-long and huge ‘Rather Mela (fair)’ is also being held around the Laupala rath with the participation of huge number of shops displaying various traditional and handicrafts, baby toys and sweetmeat.
A huge crowd was seen thronging the fair throughout the day. Hundreds of devotees from different parts of the district as well neighboring areas assembled there to observe the century old Rath Yatra festival of Hindu community.
Meanwhile, the law enforcement agencies tightened up the security measures averting any untoward incident for the sake of ensuring communal harmony on the occasion.

Main programs of the festival were held at Alupatty area in the metropolis and Khetur Gourangabari area of Godagari upazila.
Thousands of devotees joined the festival with full enthusiasm pulling chariots from city’s Rathbari to Alupatty crossing. They paraded different city streets beating drums and playing other musical instruments.
As part of the festival, a huge ‘Rather Mela’ was held on the three-kilometer Kalpona hall crossing to Seroil bus terminal.
Law enforcement agencies tightened up security measures to avert any untoward incident.
BSS from Rangpur adds: Members of the Sanaton community began celebrating the nine-day Shree Shree Jagannathdeb’s ‘Ratha Yatra’ in the city on Thursday afternoon.
The Shree Shree Radhagopinath Zeu Mandir unit of International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), Bangladesh at Tazhat in the city has chalked out elaborate programmes to celebrate the festival.
Assistant High Commissioner of India stationed at Rajshahi Sanjeev Kumar Bhati inaugurated celebrations of the ‘Ratha Yatra’ at a function held on ‘Paul Para Shree Shree Madan Mohan Thakurbari Mandir’ premises as the chief guest.
Later, thousands of devotees participated in the chariots pulled out on the city streets from ‘Paul Para Shree Shree Madan Mohan Thakurbari Mandir’ to ‘Dharmoshava Mandir’ followed by a discussion.
Senior Vice-president of ISKCON Bangladesh and Principal of Taraganj Shree Shree Radha Madanmohan Zeu Mandir Shreemot Bhaktipriyo Godadhar Goswami Moharaj Brahmachari presided over the discussion.
Deputy Inspector General for Rangpur Range Police Devdas Bhattacharya addressed the discussion as the guest of honour. Acting President of district unit of Bangladesh Puja Udjapon Parishad Ajoy Prasad Babon, its General Secretary Dhiman Bhattacharya, Sanaton community leaders Subrata Sarker Mukul, Ramakrishna Somani and Nikelendu Sarker Guho spoke on the occasion.
The nine-day programmes also include ‘Agnihotro Jaggya’, ‘Sangkirton, discussion on Jagannathdeb’s ‘Leela Mahattya’, ‘Raj Bhog’, prayers, ‘Mohaharinam Sangkirton’, ‘Ulto Ratha Yatra’ and cultural functions.
The nine-day celebrations will conclude through pulling rope of the ‘Ulto Ratha’ of the Shree Shree Jagannathdeb’s ‘Ratha Yatra’ on July 12.
