‘Rate of road accidents significantly reduced’

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Thursday said the rate of road accidents in the country has significantly reduced compare to the other countries in the world and various steps have been taken to keep the accidental death rate at tolerable limit.
“According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report in 2014, Bangladesh secured 109th position out of 172 countries while it was 90th in earlier WHO report in 2011 which means road accident has drastically reduced,” said the minister while responding to a query placed by treasury bench member M Habibur Rahman of Bogra-5 at the house.
As per the WHO’s report on “Road Traffic Accident Death Rate by Country” in 2014 showed that in terms of road accident, Bangladesh secured 109th position compared 172 countries in the world, he said.
But country’s position was 90th according to the earlier report released by the UN organization in 2011, the minister added.
According to the report, the road accident and causalities due to accident in Bangladesh is lower than many other countries in the world including India, Pakistan, South Africa, China, Thailand, Russia, Malaysia and Sri Lanka, the minister pointed out.
Apart from this, the government has taken various steps to reduce the death rate caused by the accident, he said.
The initiative includes, arrangement of training for the drivers by the BRTA, identifies 121 black spots on the national highway, initiative of undertaking various projects according to the National Road Safety Strategic Action Plan (NRSSAP), impose ban on movement of CNG auto rickshaws on 22 highway, Enactment of 4-year National Road Safety Strategic Action Plan from 2017 to 2020, our-year etc.
