Rape allegation has been raised against Supreme Court lawyer Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi, who is also a former Secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA). A junior fellow lawyer of his chamber filed a case against him with the Ramna Police Station in the capital city. Meanwhile, a High Court bench on Monday granted anticipatory bail to advocate Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi for six weeks in the case. The High Court bench of Justice K M Kamrul Kader and Justice Khizir Hayat passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the lawyer, Mirza Md Shoaib Muhit, an assistant attorney general.
The victim in the case statement said she got acquainted with lawyer Momtaz Uddin Ahmed Mehedi in 2017. Mehedi at different times proposed her love taking the advantage of being a junior colleague. At one stage, they engaged in a relationship and finally in physically.
She also alleged that Mehedi asked her to divorce her ex-husband and to marry him. To continue the new relation, she divorced her ex-husband on November 28 in 2021. However, after the divorce, Mehedi didn’t agree to marry her despite repeated pressure from the victim. Finally he got married to her on last February on the face of a threat that otherwise a complaint will be placed in the Bangladesh Bar Council, a licensing & regularity body for all advocates of Bangladesh.
The victim also alleged she was denied to enter the house, located at Green Road in the capital, of Mr Mehedi on March 23 this year, rather she was beaten badly. On the following day she was raped by Mehedi in a flat at Shegunbagicha area of the city, where she was called by Mehedi for an amicable solution over the issue.
