Rangpur region to produce 7.02 lakh tonnes winter vegetables in Rabi season

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has fixed a target of producing over 7.02 lakh tonnes winter vegetables from 35,409 lakh hectares of land during this Rabi season in Rangpur agriculture region.
According to official sources, special steps have been taken to make the programme successful by providing necessary assistance to farmers as they have been showing interests in farming winter vegetables after achieving repeated success in recent years.
The DAE, Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute (BARI), Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) and NGOs have been supplying quality seeds, agro- inputs and providing necessary technical assistance to the farmers.
Meanwhile, the early varieties of winter vegetables have already appeared in the local markets in plenty bringing smiles to the farmers with lucrative prices in the beginning of the season.
Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khondker M Mesbahul Islam today told BSS that the farmers started cultivation of winter vegetables after harvesting short duration variety Aman rice side by side with continuing harvests of early variety vegetables.
“The farmers have so far brought 13,103 hectares of land under winter vegetable cultivation and the process will get full momentum when harvest of traditional variety Aman rice begins in full swing from the third week of November,” he added.
The DAE officials and farmers are expecting bumper production of winter vegetables during the current Rabi season following favourable climatic conditions and adequate assistance being provided by the government to the farmers.
Deputy Director of the DAE SM Ashraf Ali today told BSS that many varieties of the winter vegetables already appeared in the local markets following its early farming under newer cropping patterns amid changed climatic conditions.
Meanwhile, the vegetables traders and middlemen have already started exporting some of early variety winter vegetables to Dhaka and other parts of the country by trucks from different points in all five districts under Rangpur agriculture region.
Regional Additional Director of the DAE Md Shah Alam said the farmers were showing more interests in cultivating vegetables in recent years as thousands of them already changed fates through expanded farming of winter vegetables.
