Rangpur Rangers stunned Dhaka Platoon as Rangpur notched up a slim 11-run victory over their stronger opponents Dhaka in their Twenty20 cricket match of the Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BBPL) at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in the city’s Mirpur on Friday.
Dhaka Platoon already confirmed their play-off berth securing 14 points from 11 matches, while Rangpur Rangers earned 10 points from 12 matches.
Sent into bat first, Rangpur Rangers made a fighting total of 149 for the loss of nine wickets in the allotted 20 overs and then restricted Dhaka to 138 for the loss of nine wickets in 20 overs.
Rangpur Rangers lost their early three wickets for 50 runs.
Then Lewis Gregory and Al-Amin made a notable partnership as the put on 49 runs for the fourth wicket partnership before Lewis Gregory was caught by Shadab Khan off Thisara Perera when Rangpur’s score was 99 for the loss of four wickets.
Lewis Gregory hit a sparkle 46. His 32-ball innings was studded with five fours and two sixes.
After Gregory’s dismissal, Al-Amin and Jahurul Islam contributed together 41 runs in the fifth wicket partnership before Al-Amin was caught by Ariful Hdaque off Shadab Khan when Rangpur’s total was 140 for the loss of five wickets.
Al-Amin hit a notable 35. His 24-ball knock was belted with four fours and a sixer.
Then Jahurul Islam could stay at the crease for a short period as he was bowled out by Thisara Perera when Rangpur’s score was 147 for the loss of six wickets.
Jahurul Islam made 28 from 24 balls featuring three fours.
Thisara Perera grabbed three wickets at the cost of 23 runs, while Shadab Khan bagged two wickets instead of 25 runs.
Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Mahedi Hasan picked up one wicket each for 17 and 29 runs respectively.
Dhaka Platoon had a disastrous start as opener Anamul Haque (5) was run out by Al-Amin when Dhaka’s total was just nine.
After departure of Anamul, Tamim Iqbal and Mahedi Hasan contributed together 46 runs for the second wicket partnership before Mahedi Hasan (20) was caught by Shane Watson off Arafat Sunny when Dhaka’s total was 55 for the loss of two wickets.
Later, batsmen of Dhaka Platoon failed to make any worthy partnership.
Tamim Iqbal fought back making 34 from 33 balls including two fours and a sixer.
Junaid Khan, Taskin Ahmed, Arafat Sunny claimed two wickets each for 22, 25 and 29 runs respectively.
Lewis Gregory and Mustafizur Rahman took one wicket each conceding 25 and 31 runs respectively.
Lewis Gregory was adjudged the Man of the Match for his all-round performance.
