Rangpur Correspondent :
Rangpur City Corporation’s Mayor Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa on Saturday declared unity with the movement of Bidi workers and traders to press home their seven-point demands.
”In Rangpur, millions of workers, farmers and traders are involved in the Bidi industry. This industrycannot be shutdown suddenly. I am declaring unity with the logical movement to save the Bidi industry,” he said while addressing a grand rally, organized by Bangladesh Bidi Workers Federation, at Rangpur Public Library premise.
Speaking as the chief guest, the Mayor also called upon the Bidi industry owners to increase the wages of the workers. He added that this industry will be protected at any cost.
Executive Vice President of Bangladesh Bidi Workers Federation Amin Uddin BSC presided over the rally while Vice-President of Bangladesh Bidi Sramik Federation Abdul Matin, Joint Secretary HarikHossain, Co-organizing Secretary Abul Hasnat Lavlu, Publicity Secretary Shamim Islam, Labor leader Amirul Islam, Mozaffar Hossain, Rashedul Islam, JamilAkhter, Afzal Hossain, Golap Hossain, Hamidar Rahman and Jhangir Alam, among others, spoke to the program. Thousands of Bidi workers were present at the rally.
Speakers at the rally said that tax was imposed on the industry as a part of conspiracy. The industry is being destroyed by the excessive tax pressure. Millions of Bidi workers are becoming unemployed. Some of them are getting involved in criminal activities. Bidi workers are struggling to bear their household costs. The government decided to reduce the smoking. We are not against it. But in the name of anti-smoking measures, cigarette companies have been given the monopolistic opportunity to run theirbusiness. They are just trying to terminate the Bidi industry. We will not allow this conspiracy to be implemented in any way. If necessary, we will go on a rigid movement on the streets.
