Noman Mosharef :
The government is going to stop the sales of LPG cylinders here and there to ensure the security of the people.
There are allegations that gas cylinders are major cause of several massive fires incidents in recent times.
According to a survey, more than 100 people had died over 81 LP gas accidents last year.
Source said, Energy Division has already adopted three security
steps for marketing and sales of LPG cylinders. Firstly, the department is going to issue letter to the Deputy Commissioners’ (DC) to control the sales of LPG in everywhere. Secondly, it sought permission of Public Administration Ministry for operate mobile court. Thirdly, vigilance of the Department of Explosive will be enhanced.
Sources said that the demand for LPG is increasing day by day in the country. Ordinary people want to get it very easily. It is being sold everywhere as demand for LPG is growing up every day. But safety measures of sale of LPG are not being followed anywhere.
An Explosive Department official said that the LPG is heavier than air. This is why it accumulates in a confined space without being blown away by the wind. A spark or contact with a fire for any reason actually causes a fire. When such a fire occurs somewhere, the bulb of the cylinder opens due to the heat and a huge explosion takes place. That is why it has to be careful at every stage of use from selling of LPG.
LPG is a combination of petroleum derivatives propane and butane. It is converted to liquid gas by pressuring 10-15 times. At normal temperatures it turns into a gaseous substance. Higher temperatures than normal can damage the LPG bottle. Therefore, it is often risky to sell LPG bottles in the open air on the road. Again many times LPG cylinders are tied on both sides of the bicycle and taken for distribution. Thus, even if a mechanical vehicle collides during transport, the cylinder may explode.
An official from the energy department said there is a procedure on how to sell LPG. This method tells you how and where to keep them. LPG is now being sold in the open market in villages. The new decision is going to be effective considering it is very risky.
The decision was taken at a recent meeting of the Energy Department, he said, adding, “We have instructed the concerned officials to implement it.” I hope it will be effective immediately. ‘
When asked about this, Energy Secretary Anisur Rahman said, “Recently a big accident took place in Munshiganj and would occur in more places. Now the use of LPG has increased. In future it will be extended. Now we are allowed to keep 10 cylinders in any shop. But it’s hard to say how safe it actually is and how aware that shopkeeper is actually. So we are going to decide where to sell the cylinders. ‘
Manjurul Hafeez, Director General of the Explosives Department, said, “We always say to be careful when using LPG. Now, if any instructions are given by the ministry in the case of sale, we will implement it. ‘
