Rampal Project won’t be harmful for environ: Nasrul

State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid on Saturday said, Rampal Coal Power Plant will not be devastating for environment and, therefore, the government is determined to implement the project there.
 ” International pressure is not an important issue as we follow our country’s environment law properly,” he said it while addressing a ‘Meet the Press’ programme organized by the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) at its Sagor- Runy conference hall yesterday.
He mentioned that those countries, which were opposing the coal fired power plant project, arrival at present position, using coal in power generation.
 “We will use clean coal (minimum sulfur contained coal) and super critical technology for power generation. It is very much environment friendly,” Nasrul Hamid said.
The minister said, “We can import around 10,000MW electricity from Nepal and Bhutan, as the Indian government has given consent to use their corridor.”
Bangladesh will go for joint investment with Nepal and Bhutan for setting up hydro- power project there. For this separate deal will be signed with Nepal and Bhutan within a short time considering low cost of the electricity, he said.
To a question on fuel price cut, Nasrul Hamid said, considering different factors, including international market price of fuel oil, the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina did not agree with fuel price cut proposal.
Giving credit to the government’s policy for big progress in electricity generation, the minister said that the system will be introduced from February that Power connection will be provided on the day of submitting application.
The government will cancel the Niko deal soon considering it harmful for the country’s interests ignored by the BNP- Jamaat government.
The programme was moderated by DRU General Secretary Mursalin Nomani and presided over by the President of DRU Shakhawat Hossain Badsha.
