Rallies to save Bidi industry

Bidi workers, consumers and tobacco farmers separately staged rallies and formed human chains at Chattogram press club, Ramu bipass, Kustia municipality premises and Kaliganj of Lalmonirhat district, says a press release.
Bangladesh Bidi Consumers Association called news conference at Chattogram press club on Thursday. Another news conference, organized by Tobacco Farmers and Businessman Association in Lalmonirhat, was held at 10 am at Kaliganj press club auditorium. Bidi Consumers Association in greater Kustia staged a rally in front of the Kustia municipality office. Rally and human chains were also organized in Madaripur and Rajbari district.
At rallies, speakers voiced their seven-point demands that includes (1) revoking all taxes imposed on Bidi industry, (2) like Bidi industry in India, the Bidi industry of Bangladesh should be declared as ‘cottage industry’, (3) foreign cigarettes must be banned from the country, (4) conspiracies to terminate Bidi industry must be stopped, (5) Steps to keep lower Bidi price should be taken, (6) as long as there are cigarettes in the country, the bidi industry will remain and (7) addressing discriminations between cigarette and Bidi industry.
