The novel Rakiber Mrittu (Death of Rakib) exposes the helplessness of our society to protect the innocent children like Rakib, who are often subjected to inhuman torture to death.
Although child labour is unlawful, yet thousands of children like him work in farming land, mills and factories, buses and launches, and other outlets to assist their poor parents, but education remains like a dream.
Novelist M Islam Masud, who lives in the US State of Arizona, took up the tragic death of ill-fatted Rakib as base of his novel Rakiber Mrittu. The boy used to work in a garage of a man in Khulna, had dream to build his own garage with his savings little by little. But he did not know that he would pay heavily if he expanded his dream. Rakib was cruelly killed by the killers when he changed his employer for better wage.
In the concluding part of the novel, writer writes: Rakib’s soul departed from this world with lots of pains, sorrows and mental agitation. Rakib wanted to live (a long life). He wanted to return to school, to build a motor garage of his own. But he was not allowed to accomplish his dreams. He was, rather, handed inhuman punishment (to death), because he secured a job (of better wage) with his new employer.
There is no doubt that everything will pass by in its own way, even without Rakib. (With the passage of time), Everyone will forget him. But a lady will never forget him and she is no other than Lucky Begum, Rakib’s mother. She will lament, scream and sigh a heavy sigh till her death in the air – the air that helps our future generation and us survive.
Novelist Masud began his novel giving description of his father Nurul Alam Hawlader. He is a very poor man, lives from hand to mouth. One day when he was returning to his slum from outside, he suddenly met his eight years old daughter Rimi and 12 years old son Rakib.
When Rakib shouted with joys, “Father has come, father has come, emotion overwhelmed Nurul Alam Hawlader.” Relation between father and son should be some time emotional and sometime sensible.
M Islam Masud has three more novels namely Rahelar Nutun Bari America, Meghe Dhaka Chand, and Ekti Mrittu O Borqa.
I believe that the readers will be emotional when they will begin reading the novel and will continue till they have finished. n Reviewed by ATM Nurun Nabi
