Staff Reporter :
The Appellate Division has upheld a High Court verdict that sentenced life imprisonment to the convicts in 2015 murder of Khulna boy Rakib Hawlader.
A bench of the Appellate Division, led by the Chief Justice, passed the order on Monday, rejecting the convicts’ appeal petition.
On August 3, 2015, 12-year-old Rakib died after his former co-workers tortured him to death at a motorcycle garage in Khulna.
They inserted a high-pressure air pump nozzle into Rakib’s rectum and filled the body with air. The fatal pressure tore apart his intestine and burst his lungs, causing his death.
The next day, Rakib’s father filed a case against three people for his son’s murder.
On November 8, 2015, a Khulna court convicted two persons-garage owner Sharif and his assistant Mintu Khan-and awarded them death penalty.
The court also acquitted Sharif’s mother Beauty Begum.
After hearing the convicts’ appeals against the High Court verdict in the case, an HC bench on April 4, 2017 ordered life in prison for them commuting their death sentence. Both of them have also slapped with a Tk 50, 000 fine.
