The Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK) has demolished parts of Ha-Meem Group owner AK Azad’s Gulshan house, which was built without approved design.
RAJUK started the raid at 9:00am on Tuesday suspending the traffic in that area.
RAJUK Director Aliur Rahman, who led the raid,
said: “The house was built without following any approved design. RAJUK had not approved the structural design that they showed.”
RAJUK men demolished a boundary wall, a car parking space and parts of a balcony in the raid that continued until 11:30am.
“The whole house will go down if we abide by the rules,” he said. Rajuk with heavy machinery began demolishing the main entrance of the building earlier in the day.
Before the drive, all utility connections, including electricity and gas services were disconnected. However, the building still contains furniture and other valuables, said Rajuk Executive Magistrate Waliur Rahman.
Responding to a query, he said, “The building’s design was not approved by Rajuk.”
Azad, also former president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), was seen talking to RAJUK officials on the scene, but he did not speak to reporters.
Meanwhile, a Rajuk official, preferring not to be named, said, “The building was constructed in 1964 on 0.80 acres of land. AK Azad bought the plot 10 to 12 years ago.
“We have sent multiple notices to the home owner [AK Azad] before starting to demolish the building, but he did not care to respond.”
However, the official could not confirm that if the notices were sent directly to AK Azad.
Azad is the owner of two media outlets- Dainik Samakal and a television channel named Channel 24- in Bangladesh.
AK Azad is Chairman and Managing Director (MD) of Ha-Meem Group of Companies.
