Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) on Tuesday conducted a drive to evict all illegal establishments along the pavements in Bhashantek.
The drive-which began around 11am and ended at around 2:30pm — started at Bhashantek Bazar and worked its way towards Pocket Gate, said a press release.
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam, while inspecting the drive, said: “This road in Bhashantek is supposed to be 20 feet wide, but the building owners here have illegally occupied the road from both sides. At the moment, the road here is only eight to nine feet wide. “The reason why there is so much traffic is this narrow road. The locals and public representatives came to me, asking to widen the road. So, here we are and the people will benefit from this initiative,” he added.
In a warning to encroachers and illegal occupiers, the DNCC mayor said: “My message to them is move on your own will. Otherwise, the illegal establishments will be evicted in this way. Anything that doesn’t belong in Rajuk’s plans will be removed. Just as illegal occupiers are being evicted from the sides of the city canals, those who have built buildings outside Rajuk’s designs will also be evicted. The people’s suffering will not be tolerated.”
DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md Selim Reza, Chief Waste Management Officer Commodore M Saidur Rahman, Councillor of Ward No 15 Salek Mollah, Councillor Ward No 17 Md Matiur Rahman were present during the drive, among others.
