Rajshahi attains significant success in fish farming, production

Rajshahi district has attained significant success in the field of fish farming and production besides supplying live fishes to different parts of the country including the capital Dhaka.
Live fishes valued at around Taka two crore in around 140 to 150 trucks are being supplied to different parts of the country, including the capital Dhaka, from the district everyday at present.
Besides, a silent revolution has happened in fish farming during the last couple of years generating employment for around 2.9 lakh people in the district.
District Fisheries Officer (DFO) Alok Kumar Shaha revealed this while addressing a meeting held to mark the opening of the National Fisheries Week’ 2021 at the conference hall of Deputy Commissioner (DC) today. On the occasion, three fishermen, Moshir Uddin of Paba, Ismail Hossain of Puthiya and Aynal Haque of Durgapur Upazilas, were given prizes as their laudable contribution to fish farming and production.
DC-in-Charge of Rajshahi Shahana Akhter Jahan and Additional Deputy Commissioner Shariful Haque also addressed the meeting.
DFO Alok Shaha said there are scores of ponds on around 13,050 hectares of land producing more than 84,000 metric tons of fish last fiscal year against the demand for 52,000 metric tons.
The district has also attained significant success in fish spawn and fish fingerling production which are also surplus than the existing demand. He also told the meeting that the success has been attained as a result of adoption of multidimensional development and extension programs including promotion of modern technologies.
Fish farming is making many people financially solvent along with boosting their social dignity and contributing to meeting the demand for animal protein of the region besides different other parts of the country.
