PM urges int`l buyers: Raise prices of BD RMG products

UNB, Dhaka :Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday urged the buyers of the developed countries to raise the prices of Bangladesh’s RMG items which will ultimately help the garment workers to get higher wages.She made the call when visiting Minister of State of UK Department for International Development (DFID) Desmond Angus Swayne met her at her official residence Ganobhaban.PM’s press secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting. He said Sheikh Hasina highlighted the steps taken by her government for the development of the RMG sector and the welfare of the RMG workers.The Prime Minister said the minimum wages of garment workers have already been raised from Tk 1600 to Tk 5300 since 2009.Sheikh Hasina said, the people of Bangladesh are very much efficient and hard-working ones and they can always perform better if they get the chance. The UK junior minister praised the spectacular success of Bangladesh in achieving the millennium development goals (MDGs) and women development.”Bangladesh is a star in achieving the MDGs,” the British minister was quoted as telling Sheikh Hasina. He also highly praised Sheikh Hasina’s leadership saying that Bangladesh is awaiting a bright future under her able leadership.Swayne pointed out the development in Bangladesh’s RMG sector and particularly referred to the safety measures taken after the collapse of Rana Plaza. He said Bangladesh’s RMG workers should have more training to be more competitive in the international market.The UK junior minister mentioned Sheikh Hasina’s participation in the Girls’ Summit in London last year and said he is impressed seeing the martial art training of the girls in Chilmari. PM’s international affairs adviser Dr Gowher Rizvi, PMO secretary Suraiya Begum and PM’s special assistant Dr Abdus Sobhan Golap were, among others, present.
