A strong nor’wester accompanied by hailstorm and heavy rainfall swept the Boi Mela underway at the Bangla Academy and the Suhrawardy Maidan on Wednesday noon. As a result, the fair was declared closed for the day at 6.30 pm after brief murmur.
Yet a good number of visitors were seen in front of the gate to enter and the rainwater inside the fair was being pumped out.
Jalal Ahmed, Member-Secretary of Ekushey Boi Mela Committee, said that a large number of books were damaged, as protective measures were not adequate.
Nor’wester partially or fully destroyed many stalls, including those of Muktochinta, Jago News, Daily Star, Anna Prokash, Adarsha, Muktobak, Ahmad Publishing House, Charulipi, Saifurs, Samoy Prokashoni, Vasha Prokash and Bangla Academy Pavilion, among others.
Kiron Ahmed, Manager of Anna Prokash, said that many of their books were wet in the rain except those stored inside the stall.
Shihab Bahadur, publisher of Muktochinta, lamented that the rain had destroyed his at least two-third books of about Tk one lakh.
A discussion titled ‘Bangladesher Shikkha Babosther Prosher O Man Unnoyne Samoshya’ was held at 4:00 pm in the Kabi Shamsur Rahman Auditorium of Academy. Professor Farzana Islam presided over the function, while, Abul Momen presented the keynote. Kazi Faruque Ahmed, Monzur Ahmed and Shahinur Rahman were present as the discussant.
Later, A fascinating cultural function was held. Artistes Abdul Aowal, Sharmin Sultana, Jakir Hossein, Shaymol Kumar Pal and Abida Rahman Setu rendered songs, among others.
A discussion titled ‘Bangladeshe Nari Jagoran: Samoshya and Somvabona’ will be held today (Thrusday) in the main stage in the Academy. Begum Aktari Momtaj will preside over the function, while Masuduzzaman will present the keynote. Maleka Begum, Sultana Kamal and Muhammad Shahid uz Zaman will participate in the discussion.
At evening, a cultural program will be held.
