Most of the Dhaka city’s main roads, lanes and by-lanes went under water following heavy rains for about two hours on Tuesday, causing immense sufferings to the city dwellers.
It also triggered a severe tailback further worsening misery of the commuters.
Some 45.2 millimeters of rainfall were recorded that started at 12:00 noon, said Ruhul Kuddus, a meteorologist at Bangladesh Meteorological Department.
Many areas, including Mirpur’s Rokeya Sarani and Kazipara, Jahangir Gate, Green Road, parts of Indira Road, Tejgaon, Panthapath, Kalabagan, Dhanmondi, Jhigatala, Shankar, Jatrabari, Bashundhara Residential Area, Rampura, Badda, Khilgaon, Mauchak, Malibagh, Shantinagar, Moghbazar, Mohammadpur, Motijheel, Maniknagar, Gendaria, Tikatuli, Bijoy Sarani, and Arambagh went under knee-deep water, inflicting sufferings on the commuters.
The students suffered the most in the afternoon shower as the entire Dhanmondi went under the rainwater. The schoolgirls and boys and their guardians were seen completely drenched in the heavy rain when they were returning homes.
While talking to this reporter, a businessman said, he took an Uber ride to reach his Dhanmondi residence around 2:00pm. “When I was crossing Dhanmondi-27 intersection, stagnant water gushed inside the car.”
“Due to heavy jam created due to the rain, I got off the car and reached home walking in knee-deep water,” he said.
Sarjin Sharif, a resident of Shankar area, told reporter: “The road in front of my house has completely submerged after the rain.”
“I need to go to work, but I cannot even get out of the house to find a vehicle.”
Nafisa Nazmul, a former student of Brac University, said: “I cannot find a transport to go to Panthapath from Mirpur 10. It is raining cats and dogs.”
“The entire road is under water,” she added.
“The main roads are fine but the lanes inside are under water,” Jatrabari resident Tanjir Rahman told the reporter.
IUB faculty member Kazi Mubinul Hasan said: “I live in Bashundhara Residential area. On a usual day, it takes 45 minutes to reach Shukrabadh, but today [Tuesday], it took me one and a half hours to reach the same destination.”
Raju Ahmed, who lives at Maniknagar in Mugda said that water has entered the ground-floor flat of his building. But he was okay because he lives on the first floor.
 “There is only water everywhere because of the rain,” he added.
Dhaka is likely to receive light to moderate showers in some areas in the next 24 hours starting from 6:00pm today (Tuesday),” Met officials said.
Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rain shower is expected to occur in some places over Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department’s forecast published on their website at 9:00am, monsoon is active over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay.
