Port city Chittagong experienced heavy downpour for the last few days leaves the city under waterlogging and sufferings of the slum dwellers and low lying areas became miserable, different sources said.
After week-long dry weather Chittagong and its adjoining areas experienced heavy rainfall for the fourth consecutive day on Thursdsay.
Torrential rains that continued to shower the city since last Sunday night reached an extreme form up this afternoon paralysing civic life and business activities badly.
Some schools out 40 schools run by Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) forced to close due to overnight torrential rains.City residents were almost compelled to stay inside their residences since last morning.
Meteorology Department said they have measured 186.4 mm rainfall during last 24 hours ending 3 pm yesterday which is a record rainfall of this season. Vast low-lying, residential areas, commercial establishments, huge educational institutions were inundated with the intermittent heavy downpour.
Movements of mechanized vehicles in most parts of the city streets were hampered and a good number of vehicles remained stuck up in the knee-deep water as rain water submerged those thoroughfares for hours that increased the sufferings of city-dwellers manifolds.
Huge vehicles were stuck up in the water in different parts of the city that caused the office goers and students to reach their destinations late.
Local met office also forecast that Chittagong and its adjacent regions may experience more downpours in the next 24 hours.
Fire Service, Chittagong Metropolitan and district police control room sources said they had not received any information of rain related incidents including hill or mud collapses except two killed by wall collapse in city on Tuesday.
Officials of the Chittagong Port Authority said overall operational activities of the country’s prime seaport remained uninterrupted but unloading of bulk of cargoes from vessels and their deliveries were hampered Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport’s traffic control room sources said heavy shower did not affect its scheduled flight operation excepting delay in arrival and departure of some flights.
