Rain paralyses life in Sylhet

Torrential rain has caused water logging in most of the low-lying areas in the Sylhet city, disrupting normal life and other activities on Saturday.
Residents of the low-lying areas, which went under knee-deep to waist-deep water, remained marooned throughout the day.
Commuters suffered a lot as the main thoroughfares and other important streets of the city went under water due to the rain.
Commoners, mainly day-labourers, elderly persons, women and children, were the worst victims of the waterlogging, which also forced many to stay at homes.
Sources said the rain that started in the early hours of Saturday continued with some breaks. It intensified further in the morning and continued heavily till 12AM.
Sylhet City Corporation (SCC) Chief Engineer Lieutenant Anamul Habib told that the water logging occurred due to filling up of catchments of the important canals and high-tide during the rainfall.
In a heavy rainfall warning on Friday night, Bangladesh Meteorological Department said due to due to active monsoon and frequent thunderstorm activities over the country, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur over the places during April 21-24.
Due to very heavy rainfall, landslide may occur at places over the hilly regions of Chittagong and Sylhet divisions, according to the special bulletin.
Trough of low lies over West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh and it extends to North Bay rain. Thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty and squally wind is likely to occur at most places over Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Barisal, Chittagong and Sylhet divisions and at a few places over Khulna division, it also said.
