Rain may cause flood in Sylhet low-lying areas

Staff Reporter :It has been raining heavily in Sylhet region for several days causing huge suffering to the people. Particularly those who live in low-lying areas are facing incessant rainfall the last couple of days. Many of them have become virtually trapped in their homes. According to the Water Development Board in Sylhet, the highest 132 mm rainfall was recorded at Kanaighat upazila in last 24 hours.The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) and the Bangladesh Met office forecasted that heavy to very heavy rainfalls might continue for next two to three days. “Due to the heavy rainfalls and onrush of hilly waters from Assam and Meghalaya, the low-lying areas of Sylhet and Sunamganj districts may come under flood this week,” said Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan, duty officer of the FFWC. According to the FFWC and the Bangladesh Met office, the water level in all the major rivers flowing in Sylhet, including Surma and Kushiyara, are in the rising trend. The Water Development Board however said that the water was still flowing below the danger level despite rain.
