Monsoon rain lashed the capital Dhaka on Saturday morning, inundating low-lying areas and disrupting road traffic.
Roads, lanes and by-lanes in parts of the city went under ankle to knee-deep water, causing immense hardship to commuters and millions of dwellers.
Commuters were seen wading through a waterlogged road leading to Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka in the morning.
Activities in the capital’s business and commercial hub Motijheel were severely affected, with many office-goers, traders and workers falling behind their daily schedules.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department recorded 28 mm of rainfall in Dhaka from 6 am to 3pm on Saturday.
The department has predicted more rainfall in the next few days.
Dhaka city has been experiencing rainfall since Friday night. Light rain was continuing until 3:30pm Saturday.
Besides, moderate to heavy monsoon rain also lashed parts of the country yesterday.
UNB adds: Dhaka woke up to another drenched morning yesterday as intermittent monsoon rains continued across the country.
The monsoon trough is active over Bangladesh and moderate over North Bay, commencing at 9 am today, according to a Bangladesh Met Department weather forecast.
“The axis of monsoon trough runs through Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal to Assam across the central part of Bangladesh. One of its associated troughs extends up to North Bay,” said the BMD’s weather forecast.
However, maritime ports were advised to lower the local cautionary signal number three for now.
According to the forecast, light to moderate rain/thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind is likely to occur at most places over Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal and Chattogram divisions.
Many places over Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions are likely to see moderately heavy to very heavy rainfalls including other places over the country.
An outlook for the next 72 hours forecasted by BMD, however, showed a possible decrease in rain/thundershowers.
