Torrential rains for several hours inundated many areas of the city on Monday, causing immense sufferings to the dwellers.
Many areas, including Bahaddarhat, Gate No-2, Muradpur, GEC intersection and Golpahar areas, went under knee-deep water while Halishahar, Agrabad, Bakalia, Chalkbazar and Boropol under waist-deep water due to the incessant rains that started pouring down in the early hours.
Many shops kept their shutters down while some schools were declared
closed as water entered the buildings. The rain also created traffic chaos in the city, inflicting sufferings on the office-goers.
Some were seen wading through the knee-deep water while some others took rickshaws to reach their destinations.
Besides, the low-lying areas of Rauzan, Fatikchhari, Hathazari, Chandanaish and Satkania upazilas were inundated due to the nonstop rain.
The waterway communication of Sandwip upazila with the port city remained halted following the suspension of the plying of water vehicles.
The port city saw 145 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours till 3 pm on Monday, said Biswajit Chowdhury, an official at Patenga Met office.
Meanwhile, Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor AJM Nasir Udddin at a press conference said the incessant rains damaged 25-30 percent roads of the city, causing an financial loss of Tk 500 crore.
