Thousands of people of Jhenaidah and other districts have been facing untold sufferings as the railing of three bridges on Jhenaidah- Kushtia Highway in the district became unfit for traffic and common’s movement.
The risky bridges are not repaired for years together increasing the sufferings.
At some places the people finding no initiatives from the concern departments have bad repaired the same, while the authorities keeping their eyes almost closed, alleged the locals.
Ekram Uddin, a resident of Garaganj area in Sailkupa upazila of the district said, a railing of Garaganj Bridge was damaged when a truck dashed it about two years back. Within a few months a three wheeler fell down in to the Kali River injuring two passengers.
The matter was informed to the authority while no measure was taken. At last the locals repaired the railing with bamboo and others any how. But the temporary initiative was damaged within a few days, Ekram Uddin said.
Ashraf Ali, anther resident of the area said, three bridges out of eight on Jhenaidah-Kushtia highway were damaged for long. He said, the railing of a bridge at the western end of Garaganj Bazer was collapsed long ago that was not repaired yet.
Some farmers in the area said, they have been moving towards markets loading the vegetables and other crops on the vehicles with risk. If the crops are not taken to market, must be rotten after a certain time, they said.
Railing of another bridge at Garakahola-Moheshpur area was collapsed long ago that was not repaired also, locals said. A trucker Taizul Islam said, the vehicles and pedestrians have been moving on the bridges with risk of life and property.
Executive Engineer of the roads and highways department (R&H) in Jhenaidah Division Rafiqul Islam said, they were informed the matter and will invite tender notices as early as possible.
