Biswajit Ghosh said Rabindranath Tagore worked for the betterment of Bengalee farmers besides his literary works.
“Rabindranath, friend of farmers, established first ever agricultural bank in Asia with the money of his Novel prize. Though he introduced micro-credit system, he lent money to farmers without interest. He also wrote the book ‘The Co-Operative Principal’ on co-operative system,” said Professor Biswajit.
Biswajit, also a faculty of Dhaka University (DU) Bengali Department, came up with the remakes while speaking in a lecture organised by the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) at the auditorium of Business studies faculty of DU on Sunday, marking the 158th birth anniversary of Poet Rabindranath Tagore.
DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (administration) Poet Dr Muhammad Samad was present at the function as the chief guest with DUCSU VP Nurul Haq Nur in the chair. General Secretary of Dhaka University Journalists’ Association (DUJA) Mahdi-Al-Muhsatim Nibir, DUCSU Assistant General Secretary DUCSU Saddam Hussain, DUCSU Literature Secretary Mazharul Kabir, DUCSU Cultural Secretary of DUCSU Asif Talukdar, Student Transport Secretary Shams-e-Noman and members of DUCSU, among others, were present on the occasion. Pro-VC (Administration) Muhammad Samad said Rabindranath highlighted that the teaching methods of Nalanda, Teksasila and other Buddhist Bihars in Indian sub-continent introduced even before in Europe and Middle-East. VP Nurul Haque Nur said, “Rabindranath did not oppose the establishment of DU…If he opposed the establishment of Dhaka University, he would not have been invited in 1926”.
