The Rapid Action Battalion is yet to file charges in Twaki murder case that has rolled into the fifth year.
Tanvir Mohammad Twaki, an A Level student in ABC School in Narayanganj, went missing on Mar 6, 2013. He left his home at Shayesta Khan Road and did not return.
His body was found in a canal in the river port city two days later.
In a case started with local police, his father Rafiur Rabbi claimed that an angry group was responsible for his son’s murder.
Rabbi was an active follower of Narayanganj city Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy and founder of a forum that worked for passengers’ rights and prevention of extortion in the transport sector.
The case accused unidentified people. Police arrested four but all of them are now out on bail secured from the High Court, according to Narayanganj Public Prosecutor Wazed Ali.
The case was transferred to the Detective Branch in Narayanganj later. The High Court assigned RAB for the case on a petition by the plaintiff.
Rabbi claims that the RAB is done with its investigation but is not filing the charges because “it is under pressure.”
In March 2014, Col Ziaul Ahsan, the then additional director general of the elite force, said evidence has been found against 11 people, including Ajmeri Osman, a nephew of Awami League leader AKM Shamim Osman.
Cultural activist Rabbi had accused the influential Osman family in Narayanganj of playing a role in the murder of Twaki.
When asked on the current state of the case, RAB-11 Commander Lt Col Kamrul Hasan said: “We are trying our best to finish the probe. It’s a sensitive case, so we are prioritising it.”
He rejected Rabbi’s claim and said the RAB was not under any pressure.
“It is important to conduct the probe flawlessly. We are trying to wrap up as soon as possible.”
Local cultural personalities have slammed the authorities for the delay in filing of charges.
Dhiman Saha Jewel, general secretary of Narayanganj Sangskritik Jote, said: “We must get over the culture of impunity. We will continue waging movements until justice is served.”
Narayanganj Nagorik Committee General Secretary Abdur Rahman, Bangladesh Human Rights Commission (Narayanganj) President Mahbubur Rahman and Narayanganj Metropolitan Awami League President Anwar Hossain have echoed him.
