RAB, BIWTA to check overloading of launches

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has taken an all inclusive security measures alongside other law enforcing agencies so that home-bound people can reach their destinations safely during Eid journey.
The elite force will set up two temporary camps each at Mawa and Paturia ghats to check overloading of passengers in the launches during Eid, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Director General Benazir Ahmed has said.
The RAB DG made the statement while briefing the media during his visit at Kamalapur Railway Station in the morning.
He said: “Overloading of passengers is identified as one of the reasons of launch capsize, so we will set up the camps on the ghats to check on the matter.”
The DG also said temporary camps will also be set up in different bus terminals and railway stations to ensure hassle free and safe journey for the home-goers during the Eid.
The elite force DG said that seven to eight million people will leave Dhaka for their native villages to celebrate Eid with their near and dear ones.
This year, there has not been reported so far any unpleasant incident during Tarabi prayers and Seheri, excepting some stray incidents, added the DG.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport (BIWTA) of the district has decided that it will not allow overloaded vessels on the waterway in the days of upcoming Eid.
The BIWTA came up with the demand on Wednesday afternoon in a meeting at conference room of Barisal Port building with the representatives of launch owners, workers’ associations and law enforcing agencies.
The meeting was called for nursing safety for the Eid special vessels and passengers.
Abul Bashar Majumdar, BIWTA Deputy Director for river safety and traffic, presided over the programme attended, among others by Shahjalal Haque, Deputy Director, M. Mustafizur Rahman, port officer of BIWTA, Akkas Hossain, Abdur Rahim, and leaders of launch owners’ association, officials of launch labour association, shipping directorate and law enforcing agencies.
On the other hand, a coordination meeting called by district administration for ensuring safety of passengers was held on the day at the room with Deputy Commissioner Md Saifuzzaman in the chair.
The meeting was addressed, among others, by Murad Ahmed, journalist and SM Iqbal, Mohiuddin Manik Bir Protik.
