The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the managing director of Regent Hospital Ltd, the hospital in Dhaka in the midst of controversy for providing fake Covid-19 results and embezzling money from patients.
Masud Parvez, the MD, was arrested at around 7pm on Tuesday, in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur, RAB Director (Legal and Media Wing) Lt Col Ashik Billah said.
Masud is the second most prominent accused in fraud charges pressed by RAB, for his alleged assistance to Md Shahed, the owner of the hospital.
“We are also searching for Shahed across the country, and have raised surveillance along the border,” Lt Col Ashik said.
Earlier on Tuesday, a Dhaka court sent seven employees of Regent Hospital to jail after the end of their remand in the case.
RAB raided two hospitals of the Regent Group, in Uttara and Mirpur, on July 6 and arrested the accused for issuing fake Covid-19 test results and certificates, by using forged serial numbers and signatures of the authorities concerned, collecting illegal fees from patients, and running the hospital without having any proper approval, among other charges.
The next day, RAB filed a case against 17 people, including Regent Group Chairman Md Shahed under the Penal Code with Uttara West police station.
