Garments workers in the port city staged demonstration and enforced sit -in-programme in front of Chatogram BGMEA office at Kulsi, in the city demanding payment of arrear salary and allowances .
About 1300 workers of Golden Horizon Garments of Sunmoon Group enforced this sit- in – programme from 9 am on Wednesday for indefinite period . Demanding arrear salary, overtime allowance and protest against the retrenchment of service of the workers .
Supervisor of the Horizon Garments told this correspondent that the management of the factory stopped payment of salary from February and the factory declared closed on night of April 27 last. The factory management announced in a notice that the factory will be opened from April 30 but the workers failed to join their duties as the factory main gate was closed on that day. The management assured the workers on April 30 that the factory will resume productions from May 6 last but the scenario witnessed like April 30. Workers sources said on last day of opening date, the Director Md. Ashraf alongwith other officers left the factory premises on back door of the factory, sources said.
Baizid thana police sources said workers enforced strike demanding their arrear salaries and closing of factory without previous notice. Police said additional forces have been deployed in front of BGMEA office to avoid any unwanted situations .
BGMEA leaders and the law enforcing agencies are trying to settle the matter at earliest convenience ,locals added.
